Moving from San Francisco:
Where are people going and why?

Over the past year we’ve interviewed over 100 customers that moved from San Francisco. Our main questions were why and where are you going? We’ve noticed a major influx of moves from San Francisco over the past two years, so we started getting curious. After speaking with our customers we’ve learned that people are getting fed up with the cost of living and housing market. Thousands of people are migrating to more affordable venues such as Arizona, Texas and Nevada. If you’re one of the thousands that are planning on moving from San Francisco we can hep. Here are some tips that can help you.

First step on finding the right mover

People automatically assume to check online reviews. Although they’re a helpful tool they shouldn’t be the determining factor when choosing a moving company, and here’s why. Naturally, a larger moving company that handles 20,000 moves a year will have more complaints then a smaller mover that handles 300. We do recommend looking at reviews, but you should also look at data to see the companies fleet size, years in business and complaint history. You can simply check the DOT SAFER website to gather all of the information you need.

We suggest to stay away from lead generation websites. If a website claims “get up to 10 free price quotes” that means they’re selling leads. These websites don’t research moving companies and most have a liability clause on their website. Their main purpose is to sell leads so you may be getting a call from an unlicensed moving company who’s looking to rip you off. Google is a great tool to scout your own moving company and we recommend getting up to 3 quotes so you can compare. Before you make a final decision make sure that all moving companies are comparing apples to apples in their estimate. Moving from San Francisco should not be a stressful experience.

Be prepared before getting an estimate

Before you even start the process of finding a mover you should narrow down your article list (what you plan to move). A moving estimate is based on volume or weight so this will be the most important aspect of your quote. Secondly, we recommend knowing the location where you’re moving from and to. A mover will need to make sure they can fit a truck in the location and this will also help you avoid any surprise charges such as a shuttle fee or long carry. You can read our FAQ’s page for more information on moving related charges.

If you plan on self-packing make sure you can handle it. If the mover provides packing on the day of pick up you will be charged for it accordingly. Remember that these things cost money and the bill will be passed on to you. Most quality moving companies do offer a full pack option if needed. You should also know your moving date. Although changing a date normally isn’t an issue, the time of year can have a major effect on price. Peak season (May-August) rates are typically 25% more then off season rates. Moving from San Francisco should be a smooth process.
