The future of the moving industry

WHAT’S THE FUTURE OF THE MOVING INDUSTRY?

The moving industry has been around since wagons and horses were the primary methods of transportation. It’s a multi-billion dollar market and one of the largest in the world. There are over 7,000 registered moving companies in the U.S. who perform millions of moves annually, but what’s the future of the moving industry? You can also check out this article on the history of the moving industry.

Self Driving Trucks?

SELF-DRIVING TRUCKS – ARE THEY OUR FUTURE?

The trucking and moving industry isnt what it used to be. Being a long-distance driver used to be a desired career. However, over the past decade, the industry has seen significant declines which raised opportunities for companies like Tesla, Embark, and TuSimple who are in the self-driving space. They envision that self-driving trucks are the way of the future, but will that put drivers out of a job? Check out this video on how self-driving trucks work.
Here’s how it would work. Let’s say you’re moving a 3 bedroom home from San Francisco to New York. A local mover would pick up, pack and load the truck. The truck would then drive itself to an agent in New York who would off-load and deliver. The question is whether or not it’s safe and efficient, but only time will tell.
Moving companies have spent countless dollars on figuring out ways to recruit new drivers, but it’s been challenging. Due to all the latest technology out there millennials are looking for opportunities in the tech space, or some would say a more cushy job. Being on the road for weeks at a time can take a toll on the strongest. Over the next few years, we will find out if self-driving trucks are the future of the moving industry. Will Uber get into the moving space?

THE UBER CONCEPT – WILL IT WORK IN THE MOVING INDUSTRY?

Uber came out with one of the most exceptional concepts in my generation. They disrupted the taxicab industry and took a significant toll on Yellow Cab. They recently launched Uber Freight which is geared toward the trucking industry. The new concept allows owner-operators to log into the app and bid on jobs. Uber Freight is similar to U-Ship but offers more accessible technology for drivers to manage potential loads. But will the concept be the future of the moving industry?
There’s over 30 million American’s moving each year. Truck rentals are a large percentage of those moves. How would you feel about trusting a stranger to haul your household goods in their Uhaul truck? Some speculate that this is going to be the way of the future, but I disagree. I think it’s an exciting idea, but it won’t sustain. Moving is very personal and trusting a random person to deliver your stuff across state lines is far fetched, but hey I could be wrong. This can be the future of the moving industry.
