Why summer moves need extra planning

Roughly half of all U.S. household moves happen between May and September. Trucks book up, elevator reservations at apartment buildings fill fast, and crews run longer routes. If your lease ends or your closing date lands in summer, start planning at least eight weeks out.

International Van Lines runs regular long-distance and local moving routes nationwide from our Coral Springs headquarters. Peak season does not change how we quote or coordinate a move, but it does affect availability. The earlier you lock in a survey and pickup window, the more options you have.

Eight weeks before moving day

  • Request a free virtual or in-person survey so your quote reflects actual shipment size and access at both addresses.
  • Compare at least two licensed carriers. Check each company’s USDOT number on the FMCSA SAFER system.
  • Notify your landlord, HOA, or building manager about move-out and move-in dates.
  • Start a room-by-room inventory. Label what stays, what sells, and what donates.
  • Gather medical, school, and pet records if you are crossing state lines.

Four weeks before moving day

  • Confirm your mover’s pickup and delivery spread. Summer transit times can run longer on popular lanes like New York to Florida or California to Texas.
  • Order packing supplies or schedule professional packing if you want help with fragile items.
  • Transfer utilities and update your mailing address with USPS.
  • Service your vehicle if you plan to drive to your new home.

One week before moving day

  • Pack a “first night” box with toiletries, chargers, medications, and basic kitchen items.
  • Defrost the refrigerator at least 24 hours before loading.
  • Take photos of electronics cable setups before disconnecting them.
  • Keep heat-sensitive items (candles, vinyl records, certain cosmetics) with you in the car or climate-controlled space.

Moving day in hot weather

Crews start early for a reason. Loading in the morning reduces heat exposure for both movers and your belongings. Keep water available, clear walkways, and reserve the elevator or loading dock if your building requires it.

If you have plants, artwork, or wine collections, tell your coordinator during the survey. Those items may need special handling or a separate transport plan.

After delivery

Walk through each room before signing off on delivery. Note any damage on the bill of lading right away. Unpack essentials first and give yourself a day before tackling full room setup.
