Per the DOT (Department of Transportation) there are an estimated 7,000 existing moving companies in the U.S. The largest moving companies in the world reside here in America. About 2700 of these movers are agents for a van line such as Mayflower or United Van Lines. We’ve compiled a list of the top 5 largest movers based on the number of registered trucks in their fleet. United Van Lines is one of the oldest and largest moving companies in the U.S. They rank number one based on their fleet size and moves performed annually. UVL is a subsidiary of UniGroup, Inc which is a multi-billion dollar enterprise. They were established in 1928 and currently maintain headquarters in St. Louis, MO. Their core business is long-distance moving, but they offer all services which include local, long-distance and international moving. They are the most recognized name in the industry and are often awarded Government and military contract. They rank number one of the list for largest moving companies in the U.S.

U-pack is a DIY (do it yourself) moving service. They will send a container to your home, you load, and they drive. The business model and served them well and they rank two for largest moving companies in the U.S. according to the DOT they operate 3,848 trucks nationwide. Although their services sound like they would save you money most of the time they don’t. The cost of running a business like this is very high, and those prices are passed to the customer. Their business model is great for anyone that does not trust going with a moving company.

Atlas Van Lines

Atlas Van Lines is one of the most recognized names in moving. With over 3,759 trucks it makes them the 3rd largest moving company in the U.S. The company was formed in 1948 by a group of local moving companies. They currently have about 500 agents worldwide and about 75 of them own shares of the company. Their headquarters are in Evansville, IN. AVL offers all services related to the moving industry.

Mayflower is a moving company. They’ve been around since the early 1900s which makes them one of the oldest moving companies still in existence today. Like United Van Lines they’re part of UniGroup which is a multi-billion dollar conglomerate of relocation companies. Mayflower also maintains headquarters in St. Louis. Although it’s a different corporation then United Van Lines some would speculate that it’s the same company. Mayflower offers long-distance, local and international moving services among other services.

Allied is one of the oldies. They’ve been around since 1928 and founded as a non-profit organization established by agents on the east coast, to assist with arranging return load a minimizing empty space on trucks. Allied went public in 1968 and is one of the largest moving companies in the U.S. They offer all moving services and maintain an excellent reputation.
